A convicted murderer supposedly paid his debt to society and walked out of prison more than a year ago as a new man. But officials said it didn't take long for the ex-convict to get into trouble again. In a NewsChannel5 exclusive, Paul Kiska reported that several people trusted Manuel Arias (pictured, left), only to become alleged victims of rape. Arias was serving prison time for strangling an Elyria, Ohio, woman in 1981. While in prison, Arias took parenting classes and classes to become a counselor, as part of a rehabilitation program. When he was released from prison, an outreach program placed Arias at the Haven Center, a homeless shelter that helps families in Lorain County. It was at the Haven Center that Arias allegedly handcuffed a 23-year-old woman (pictured, below) and raped her in a back room. A 35-year-old woman has come forward with similar allegations of sexual assault. His alleged victims said Arias was absolutely charming until they found out about his evil side. Bob Falkenstine, director of the Haven Center, said that the organization was unaware of Arias' violent past. Arias is currently being held on a parole violation in the Lorain County Jail. He faces at least three or four felony charges, including gross sexual imposition, rape and kidnapping. Officials said he could also face sexually violent predator specifications. |
