Juárez Prison Lets Inmates Display Work on Internet

The Cereso prison in Juárez has launched a new Web site for its inmates to market their art and craftsmanship to the rest of the world.
Cereso Director Arturo Herrera Robles said the Web site is designed to advertise the kind of products some of the inmates can make to order, as varied as original paintings and wood furniture.
'The page went on the Internet on February 4, and with it, we hope to serve several purposes, including the rehabilitation of our inmates,' Herrera said. 'We are using Cereso funds to maintain the Web site. We are trying to do something different to help the inmates make money to support themselves and their families. They can use the money to make restitution, and in some cases, raise their bond money so they can be released.'
Some of the products inmates make are illustrated on the Web site at www.ceresojuarez.com (http://www.ceresojuarez.com), which also provides the address and telephone number for the prison.
The Cereso in Juárez currently has 3,705 inmates, including 200 women. The majority are in jail for minor drug-related offenses.
'We have women who make arts and crafts, and they too will participate in the program,' Herrera said.
Santiago Ibarreche, a marketing professor at the University of Texas at El Paso, said using the Internet to market their products is a good idea, 'given the obvious restrictions the inmates have.'
'One of the keys to successful marketing on the Internet is to get the right links and get on the right search engines,' Ibarreche said.
Prison officials said several inmates already produce wooden bases for beds, which are sold in the Albuquerque area.

Do you know someone who has been arrested in Waco or McLennan County? It’s important to find a good Waco lawyer to represent you in the matter involving your own liberty. Look for the best Waco Lawyer that you can find. Whether you have been accused rightly or wrongly, it’s important to know your legal rights that concern whether you go to jail.
