A man was executed last week for fatally slashing and stabbing a paralyzed woman in a wheelchair less than a month after he got out of prison. Richard Head Williams, who had previously maintained his innocence, was contrite and took responsibility for his 1997 crime in a statement seconds before his execution by lethal injection. 'I'd like to apologize for all the pain I've caused,' he said, looking at three brothers of his victim. 'I'm sorry I caused what happened to your sister. I apologize.' Williams, 33, was the ninth Texas inmate executed this year. In an interview this month, Williams said he never saw or knew the victim, Jeanette Williams, 44, and that his criminal past earned him the trip to death row. The victim was not related to Williams. Authorities said Williams was given $400 for the slaying by Bruce and Michelle Gilmore, who had been caring for Jeanette Williams intermittently and had taken out a $25,000 life insurance policy on her. Jeanette Williams was a crack addict who was paralyzed after she was shot by her husband 21 years earlier. She was killed 24 days after Williams was discharged from prison after serving time for sexual assault, burglary and arson. The Gilmores are serving life prison terms for capital murder. |
