N.Y. Probation Department Clears Growing Number of Convicts

Fifteen judges have written to city officials to voice their opposition to the growing number of convicted felons released before the end of their probation.
Between last July and October, 1,079 convicts with no disciplinary issues were released, a significant increase from the 90 probationers cleared during the same four-month period in the previous year.
The Probation Department, operating with fewer resources, has been forced to release more probationers as a cost-cutting measure. The department's budget was reduced by $40 million and could be cut even further as Mayor Michael Bloomberg tries to stem an estimated $3.4 billion budget deficit.
''The whole goal is to do more with less, despite the budget cuts,'' department spokesman Jack Ryan told The New York Post in March 3rd editions.
Ryan said the Probation Department could devote more energy to the highest-risk cases by clearing more convicts early.
But some judges have opposed the action.
''It is one thing for a judge to consider early termination after a defendant has complied with the conditions of probation for a term of years,'' Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Abraham Gerges told the Post. ''It is quite another for the Probation Department to expect judges to routinely consent to early termination.''

Do you know someone who has been arrested in Waco or McLennan County? It’s important to find a good Waco lawyer to represent you in the matter involving your own liberty. Look for the best Waco Criminal Defense Lawyer that you can find. Whether you have been accused rightly or wrongly, it’s important to know your legal rights that concern whether you go to jail.
