Many residents in Citronelle are outraged after learning inmates got intoxicated inside the city jail. How did they got booze behind bars? Police chief Conrad Ried told WPMI an underage trustee, an inmate with special privileges, left the jail and brought back liquor and beer. Then he and other inmates got drunk. The police report stated that trustee Jessie Ridderjbelke was unsteady on his feet and had slurred speech when police went to lock the day room of the jail. Police could smell a strong odor from his breath. Officers asked Jessie for a breath sample which he refused. Another inmate, James Johnston gave police two breath tests and both were positive. Two other inmates Travis Guist and Latavius Johnson also drank the alcohol. As a result, all four men were charged with public intoxication. Found in their possession were two empty bottles of liquor and a case of empty beer cans. Police say they are unsure where Ridderjbelke got the alcohol. Ridderbjelke is also charged with theft of property and destruction of city property. While intoxicated he stole two docket sheets. |
