A St. Charles Parish work-release inmate who jumped into the Mississippi River trying to save his friend has died. Jacques Allemand, 24, was taken to the St. Charles Parish Hospital in Luling in critical condition on February 27. A second brain scan determined that he was brain dead, and he was taken off life support the following morning, said Maj. Sam Zinna of the St. Charles Parish Sheriff's Office. The inmate who fell in the water, Darnell Lane, was pronounced dead two hours after the accident. The two inmates were working for Clean Marine, a company that cleans barges in Ama, Zinna said. A hose with high water pressure appears to have caused the accident, Zinna said. Lane was holding the hose to clean the front of the barge when Allemand turned the water on and the force of the water sent Lane into the air, authorities said. Lane fell between two barges, hit his head and went underwater, Zinna said. Allemand jumped in after him, but was pulled underwater by the river's undertow. Both inmates were in a work-release program for inmates convicted of nonviolent crimes, Zinna said. Lane had been found guilty of a narcotics violation, and Allemand had been convicted of violating his probation for burglary and narcotics, Zinna said. |
