Arizona Jail Could Be Hit Hard By Military Call-ups

Tucson-area law enforcement agencies have plugged the gaps as police officers and deputies have been called to active military duty for the possible war with Iraq.
But more call-ups could seriously hamper operations at the Pima County Jail, officials said.
The jail, already struggling with crowding and a shortage of corrections officers, has lost eight of its 322 officers to active duty. Another 35 at the jail are eligible for call-up.
'If all 35 go away, that would be a hit,' said Martha Cramer, assistant chief of the Sheriff's Department, which runs the jail.
The jail, designed to house 1,300 prisoners, has an average daily population of 1,450.
And when call-ups by the military reserves and National Guard began, the jail was 15 officers under the number authorized in its budget.
Cramer said she has adequately staffed the jail of late by having officers work more overtime.
'If people are working great numbers of hours, the chances for mistakes go up,' she said. 'It becomes dangerous for our employees if they're tired.'
