Prosecutors have ordered new DNA testing on evidence used to convict 10 more people, four of them now on death row, after an independent audit uncovered widespread problems at the Houston police lab. Harris County District Attorney Chuck Rosenthal has said several hundred cases - perhaps as many as 400 - will be retested. Twenty-one had been ordered by March 1, including seven involving death row inmates. The review was prompted by a state-ordered audit in December that revealed, among other things, that there were holes in the roof that allowed rain to possibly contaminate samples. Following the audit, the department suspended DNA testing at the lab. DNA lab chief Donald Krueger voluntarily retired last month, and Mayor Lee Brown and Police Chief C.O. Bradford said last week that they had known about structural problems at the lab for quite some time. 'There are several people in several entities involved in trying to resolve the issues surrounding the crime lab,' Bradford said in Saturday editions of the Houston Chronicle. Bradford said he would unveil a plan for improvements at the lab soon. |
