A Salvador Dali painting donated by the Surrealist artist to New York City's Rikers Island prison in 1965 has been swiped from the entrance to the men's high-security jail. A corrections officer discovered the painting of Christ on the cross was missing on March 1 and had been replaced by a copy stapled to the back of the double-locked display case at Eric M. Taylor Centre, said police. Dali had sent the painting to the prison in lieu of a talk he had promised to give to inmates but had to cancel due to illness. In 1985, the painting was appraised at $175,000, but has increased in value since the Spanish artist's death in 1989 and is now believed to be worth as much as three times more. The painting bore the initials 'S.D.' under an inscription in the lower left corner that read, with creative spellings, 'For the dinning room of the Prisoners Rikers Island,' according to Tom Antenen, spokesman for the Corrections Department. The 4-foot high, 3-foot wide picture, with black and brown tones, had been moved to the prison lobby about 10 years ago. |
