Noting that juvenile-justice systems nationally are overwhelmed by young offenders with addiction and mental-health problems, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation recently awarded $1.5 million in grants to address the mental-health needs of young offenders. The grants included a $1.2 million award to the National Center for Mental Health and Juvenile Justice to raise awareness and disseminate research and best-practices information. A $375,000 award to the Council for Juvenile Correctional Administrators will support leadership training and a survey of services and treatment available at juvenile-justice facilities nationally. And a $60,000 grant will help the National Center for Juvenile Justice develop an assessment tool to set benchmarks for reform efforts in several states. Accountability and rehabilitation in the juvenile-justice system are among the foundation's main grantmaking interests. |
