The filing of lawsuits by two women arrested within the last year has prompted the review of policies at San Francisco jails. KCBS' Henry Mulak reports the Sheriff wants to look at how some strip searches are being conducted. The San Francisco City Attorney denied two women's claims that strip searches at jails in the city violate state and federal law. The women are now suing. San Francisco County Sheriff Michael Hennessey will not comment on the specifics of the case because they are at the center of two lawsuits filed by the women. But Hennessey said the review will determine if improvements in regulations can be made. 'Jails are very dangerous places and we can't have people bringing in drugs and weapons that are going to injure other prisoners or injure staff,' Hennessey said. 'Suicide is the leading cause of death in county jails throughout America and we have to be very cautious about people who are brought in,' he said. The Sheriff said San Francisco jails are already among the most humane in the country. Police booked 39-year-old Deborah Flick on charges of suspicion of public intoxication in March. 48-year-old Mary Bull was arrested on felony vandalism charges from an anti-war demonstration last November. Both say they were stripped and left naked in cold jail cells. Both cases never made it to trial. |
