Two women who pleaded guilty to helping their brother -- a man long associated with illegal gambling in Pennsylvania -- run a gambling business in part from prison will join him behind bars. Joanne Williams, 58, of Carnegie, was sentenced last Wednesday to eight months in prison, while Antoinette DePofi, 62, of Scott, received four months for helping Adolph Williams run the ring, which netted as much as $2.5 million a year. Federal prosecutors said the family, which once had ties to the Pittsburgh Mafia, had been running numbers for years and continued illegal gambling operations after Adolph Williams, 69, of Scott, was on trial, in prison and on medical release for a 1996 conviction. Their brother pleaded guilty in March and was sentenced to two years in prison, in addition to two more years for violating the conditions of his medical release. Federal authorities broke up the latest ring, which took bets on the Pennsylvania state lottery, in January 2001. |
