State police and Tunkhannock Borough police officers who responded to a Dec. 28 riot at Wyoming County Prison were honored at a recent commissioners meeting. Warden Mickey Ameigh said when he arrived at the prison that night, he saw borough and state police cars at the jail. He thanked the officers for a quick response. 'When the police hear there is a problem at the prison - they come.' Tunkhannock Borough Chief David Ide recently filed charges of riot, failing to disperse upon official order and four counts of disorderly conduct against four men, who are current inmates at the prison. 'When I first moved here, I thought it was going to be like Mayberry,' Ameigh said, 'but we experience the same problems as federal facilities. We don't have the resources or the staff to handle all of the problems, and my hat goes off to all the officers in this community,' he said. 'The people of this community should be encouraged by the strength of our professionals.' The prison is on Stark Street in a residential area of Tunkhannock Borough. The night of the riot, neighbors were complaining about the noise that the inmates were making, Mayor Norm Ball said. 'People feel a lot safer and secure now after what happened because it was handled professionally and without any major problems,' he said. 'It's a great cooperative effort on their part, and to all the police I give my thanks.' |
