Two inmates who escaped from the Richland County (Mont.) jail last Monday night were back in custody after less than three hours on the lam.
Richland County Sheriff Brad Baisch said Wayne Swenson, 41, and Corey Roberts, 21, escaped through a window in the Sidney jail's kitchen at about 7:15 p.m. after they had assaulted a detention officer.
Swenson, who is being held on charges of armed robbery and felony assault, was apprehended around 7:45 p.m. about a block south of the Richland County Law Enforcement Center, which includes the jail. Roberts was in jail on felony forgery and theft charges.
Officers from the Richland County Sheriff's Office, the Sidney Police Department, the Montana Highway Patrol, Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks and members of the Sidney Volunteer Fire Department had joined the search and continued to look for Roberts.
Authorities received information that Roberts had broken into a residence and had used the telephone to call relatives, according to Baisch.
After contacting Roberts' relatives, officers received the telephone number for the residence where Roberts made the call. Authorities went to the house and arrested Roberts without incident. The detention officer, whom Baisch wouldn't name, was treated at Sidney Health Center and released.
Baisch said Swenson and Roberts will be charged with felony escape and felony assault charges, and Roberts will also be charged with felony burglary for the residential break-in.
