A corrections support staff members has resigned amid an internal investigation into the Jan. 8 escape of a prisoner from the Putnam County (Fla.) Jail.
Paul Dennis, an eight-month employee at the Putnam County Jail, submitted his resignation to Sheriff Taylor Douglas last Monday.  Dennis, who was assigned to the control room on the morning of the escape, became the focus of the investigation.
Control room operators must identify each inmate before they are allowed to leave the pod.  The investigation determined that Dennis violated established security protocols.
Dressed in a white jump suit, Johnny Edward Staten Jr. was allowed to leave the secure pod.  Staten, 24, was sentenced to 30 years in prison for armed carjacking and was awaiting transfer to the Department of Corrections.
Prisoner Steven Coleman, 18, was charged with aiding Staten's escape after the investigation revealed he gave Staten a jumpsuit worn by kitchen personnel, said Sheriff Taylor Douglas.
Deputies said the white kitchen uniform allowed Staten to mix with the general jail population during the morning feeding time. They said he climbed over the razor-wire fence, cutting himself.
Deputies found a bloody jumpsuit about one-half mile south of the jail.
