Oregon Sheriff Wants Armed Volunteers to Fight Terrorism Threat

To address the threat of terrorism, a sheriff in rural Oregon has proposed arming citizens to patrol important but remote sites, according to the New York Times.
'We cannot handle the responsibility without the help of our citizens,' said John Raichl, sheriff of Clatsop County. 'Pretty soon we were depleting every resource we had, and we had nobody for policing services any longer.'
Raichl's seeks 125 citizens who would volunteer in pairs to patrol high-risk areas, including high-power electrical transmission lines, natural-gas pipeline control stations, electrical substations, and chemical storage areas. He said that the volunteers would be trained and put through background checks. The volunteers would use their own weapons.
