Two former inmates of the Edna Mahan Correctional Facility for Woman in New Jersey testified last Wednesday that a former corrections officer befriended them and then convinced them to pose nude for photographs. During the second day of testimony in the trial of Ralph Grier, the court heard how the former corrections officer used compliments, candy, cigarettes and the promises of favors to lure two convicts into posing for nude pictures and sexual encounters. Grier is charged with two counts of sexual assault and two counts of official misconduct. Tyeika Henry said she first met Grier at the prison in 2002 where she was serving time for a parole violation and a conviction on charges of aggravated assault. "He started coming down to see me," Henry said. In time, Grier began to give Henry cigarettes, candy and compliments about her appearance. Henry said Grier even gave her a pair of earrings -- contraband that later was seized by another officer during a routine search of her cell. "A couple of times he asked me to flash him," Henry told the jury. Grier eventually made a deal to pay Henry $150 and get her transferred out of North Hall, the prison's wing used for problem inmates, she testified. On Jan. 2, 2002, Grier snuck a digital camera into the prison, unlocked Henry's cell and had her pose for the photos, prosecutors allege. After taking the nude pictures, Henry said Grier began to kiss different parts of her body. Henry said Grier never came through on his promises to pay her $150 and get her moved out of the North Hall. While Henry told Grier to send the money order using her grandmother's address from Blackwood, N.J., he made a mistake in addressing the envelope, she testified. Grier did give Henry copies of the pictures that were later found during a routine "toss" of her room while she took a shower, she said. The finding of the pictures set off the internal investigation that led to Grier's indictment. After a lunch break, Prosecutor Dawn Solari called the other former inmate, Olga Rolon, to the stand, who also claimed to have developed a relationship with Grier. She said that he also took nude photos of her. |
