| Iowa Police Issue Alert on Teen Release |

Police issued a public warning Friday about a soon-to-be released teenage inmate because he allegedly threatened to molest, mutilate or kill children when he's free. 'The threats he made while he was incarcerated are shocking,' said Sgt. Tony Steverson, Des Moines Police Department spokesman. 'We feel that he may be a serious risk to the community.' Jesse Dee Souder, 18, will be transferred from a county jail to a halfway house in Des Moines on Monday, where he is to serve the final 180 days of his sentence. Authorities say they can't keep Souder in jail or charge him with a new crime because the verbal threats did not target a specific person. Souder has no known history of sexual violence or crimes aimed at children. He was convicted of a series of assaults. One of his relatives said he believes the public warning is justified. 'I don't think he'll be out a week before he is arrested again,' said Steve Souder, an uncle who once took care of the youth. Fred Scaletta, spokesman for the Iowa Department of Corrections, said Souder will be under more restrictions than other people in the halfway house. 'If there's any treatment, assignments or programs outside the facility, he will be escorted,' he said. Souder's picture and other information were distributed to local media Friday. Souder's lawyer, Susan Stockdale, said the alert will make life more difficult for her client. He was placed in the halfway house so he could receive counseling, she said. 'With this alert, it's going to hamper these efforts,' she said. |
