Paraguay Prison Riot Leaves 22 Inmates Dead

Twenty-two inmates burned or suffocated to death during a riot at a prison in Ciudad del Este on Saturday, while another 50 were injured, police said.
The riot at the jail on the border with Brazil and Argentina, some 220 miles from the Paraguayan capital, started after an officer shot and seriously injured an inmate who threatened the jail's security chief with a homemade weapon as he did his rounds.
Fires started by the inmates then spread out of control, and officials had to use a tractor to tear out the bars from the wing where the prisoners were trapped.
'An official had to give the order for a tractor to be used to pull the bars from the window ... to be able to get the injured out, but many were trapped and died or asphyxiated in the fire,'' a photographer for local newspaper Noticias, who witnessed the incident, told Reuters.
A police spokesman said 11 of the injured were in critical condition.
Prison riots are relatively commonplace in Latin America.
Brazil was hit by its biggest ever prison riot in February, when 29,000 inmates rebelled, drawing attention to what they said were inhumane conditions and inadequate security.
