An examination of DNA from prison inmates has led investigators to identify a suspect in five 1997 rapes that happened in Indianapolis.
Investigators recently said 38-year-old Charles L. Hill, who is serving an eight-year prison term in northern Indiana on a burglary conviction, faces 22 felony counts in connection with the sexual assaults.
Investigators said Hill's DNA matched evidence in the five rape cases, which happened between April 1997 and July 1997.
Hill's DNA was in a prisoners' DNA database, which was used in a comparison three months ago with DNA from the rape cases, police said.
Police said Hill lived in Indianapolis at the time of the rapes.
Marion County prosecutor Scott Newman said that the discovery sends an important message to criminals.
'Years may go by, and you may think you you've gotten away with something, but the finger of God in the form of the DNA code is going to reach down and say, 'You're the guy, and you will be held accountable,' ' Newman said. 'And that's what happened to Charles Hill today.'
If convicted of the 22 counts, Hill could face a prison sentence of up to 730 years.
