Leftist rebels attacked a prison with machine guns and mortars in a bold bid to free jailed comrades, but were repelled by officers and government forces, Colombian officials said recently. Three inmates were killed in the fighting late December 17 on the outskirts of Florencia, the capital of the southern state of Caqueta, said prisons spokesman Oscar Galvis. He said five inmates and four guards were wounded. Nine inmates who escaped through a hole the rebels blasted in the prison wall with a homemade mortar were soon recaptured, Galvis said. Authorities said about 200 members of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, Colombia's largest rebel group, participated in the attack on the federal prison. The prison holds 1,100 inmates, many of them convicted or accused members of the FARC, as the rebel group is known. The National Liberation Army, or ELN, declared a unilateral cease-fire from last Tuesday through Jan. 6, but said it would rescind the cease-fire if attacked by government forces. The ELN declared the halt to its attacks, kidnappings and sabotage of oil pipelines and power lines 'to create a climate of confidence'' in peace talks with the government that began in Havana last week. Additional talks are planned for January to create a framework and agenda for formal negotiations aimed at ending the ELN insurgency after more than 30 years. But while there was guarded optimism that talks with the ELN might yield results, negotiations with the FARC remained at a standstill. President Andres Pastrana made a plea for the FARC to comply with an October agreement to begin cease-fire deliberations. The rebels have refused to start the talks. |
