| Inmate 'Elves' Make Toys For The Holidays |

Santa has recruited a handful of new helpers -- inmates from the honor farm at the Stanislaus County, California jail. They're helping make the holidays brighter for hundreds of needy kids. 'We work eight, nine hours a day,' inmate helper Melvin Jones said. They're busy cutting, drilling, and sanding wooden cars. 'We're expecting to put out 200 pieces,' Stanislaus County Sheriff's Dept. Honor Farm Jail spokeswoman Sandra Clark said. Since Dec. 9, inmate 'elves' have been getting into the holiday spirit. They volunteered to make hand-crafted toys for needy kids. 'It means a lot to a lot of kids who don't have nothing. They'll be happy with them. I'll be happy they have them,' inmate helper Gary Thornhill said. 'It also makes us feel good, makes other kids feel good,' inmate helper Scott Johnson said. Hundreds of wooden toy boxes and model cars will be ready to be delivered by week's end. Toys won't just go to needy kids, but also to the children of inmates at the honor farm. 'We all miss our kids. It's nice to be able to do something for the kids,' workshop foreman Jeffrey Merrill said. They know they can actually give for the first time at the honor farm. And the gift of giving doesn't stop there. Farm officials said that they want to do it bigger and better next year. |
