Escaped Rapist Arrested in Oregon

A convicted rapist was arrested Wednesday, two days after he escaped from a state prison and allegedly sexually assaulted a woman, police said.
Leighton Bates, 41, was spotted by an off-duty corrections officer and surrendered to authorities without incident, authorities said.
A motorist reported picking up a hitchhiker Tuesday and dropping him off at tavern. The driver later saw Bates' picture and told police he may have helped the escaped convict.
Bates was captured less than a mile from the tavern.
Bates escaped from the medium-security Oregon State Correctional Institution apparently by wrapping himself in plastic and hiding in a delivery truck, said Gerald Long, a corrections department spokesman.
That night, he allegedly assaulted a 46-year-old woman in her laundry room.
When the woman's teen-age son came looking for her, Bates forced both of them back to the apartment where he spent the night, police said. Bates exchanged his prison clothing for some of the teen's clothing and forced the woman to drive him to a state park. She then contacted police.
Bates was serving time for rape, kidnapping and robbery. He was convicted after he posed as a stranded motorist in April and kidnapped and raped a teen-ager.
'I'm not somebody that needs to be outside, not in my present mental state for the past 25 years,'' Bates said at his sentencing.
The earliest he could have been released was December 2037.
Bates escaped from the Salem prison once before, in 1985. In 1992, he escaped from a minimum-security prison in Baker City.
