A Placer County Sheriff's Department transportation van overturned Thursday morning, killing one prisoner and injuring two others.
The van was headed eastbound on Interstate 80 in Placer County and was carrying one officer and three prisoners from Auburn to a court appearance in Tahoe City when the deputy lost control of the vehicle on the slick roadway.
'It was very cold up here and there was ice on the road. Then it started to snow and the ice became covered with snow,' Capt. Brad Marenger said.
The California Highway Patrol said all passengers were accounted for and there were no attempted escapes.
The inmate who died in the crash has been identified as Gary Lee Williams, 53, of Kings Beach.
Inmates Amir Shiringoharian, 33, and Rachel D. Langsdale were taken to Sutter Roseville Hospital. Authorties said their injuries were not life-threatening.
The deputy was not injured.
Officials said the inmates were not wearing seatbelts.
'There's an exemption in the vehicle code for jail transportation ... in this case they weren't, they were in belly chains and handcuffs,' Marenger said.
The incident is being investigated.

Hiring an attorney can present confusing situations for someone. It’s hard to tell whether you’ll get the best service possible in your situation. You likely have a lot of questions. Will your lawyer hand off your matter to someone else? Will your lawyer return your phone calls? It’s hard to know without someone you can trust. If you been Waco work injury lawyer you need a lawyer. People in Central Texas have trusted Dunnam & Dunnam for almost 100 years for their most pressing legal concerns. They understand the value of a good advocate. They’re a family helping Waco families since 1925.
