A prison inmate was shot and killed by a tower officer after the prisoner ignored a warning shot and commands to stop fighting with a cellmate, a spokeswoman said Monday. Abdul Ali, 21, was shot Sunday at the Washington State Penitentiary as inmates were going to breakfast, said spokeswoman Lisa Scamahorn. The officer who fired the fatal shot believed the inmate who was being assaulted was in danger of being killed or seriously injured, she said. Another officer had fired the warning shot. 'Usually, a warning shot does the trick,' she said. Both officers were placed on routine administrative leave pending an investigation. It was the first time officers had shot an inmate at the prison in at least 30 years, Scamahorn said. Ali's cellmate, Bryant Milo, was listed in stable condition Monday at the prison infirmary. Ali was serving a 27-month sentence on a cocaine conviction and was scheduled to be released in July. Milo also is serving time for a drug conviction, Scamahorn said. |
