A Massachusetts correction program officer accused of sexually assaulting female inmates was recently acquitted by a jury in Worcester Superior Court. A jury deliberated about four hours before finding Daniel Tessier, 27, of Worcester, innocent of the alleged attack at the state Correction Department's prerelease center in Lancaster. He had been charged with unnatural rape, two counts of indecent assault and battery and assault and battery. Tessier was accused of assaulting three female inmates during the early morning hours of Oct. 20, 1999, in their rooms at the center. He was suspended without pay as a result of the charges, although he denied the allegations. The alleged assaults were not reported until December 1999 because the inmates said they feared they would not be believed, would lose privileges and would be transferred to another institution. In his closing argument, Assistant District Attorney Richard L. Greco said the complaining witnesses had no motive to lie. ''It took a long time for them to stand up and come forward, but they did so,'' the prosecutor said. However Tessier's attorney, William D. Crowe, suggested there was ''some sort of coordination of testimony'' among the three women who accused Tessier. |
