TDCJ Takes Action In Protecting Correctional Officers
By KEYE
Published: 02/11/2002

The Texas Department of Criminal Justice has announced a series of initiatives designed to protect correctional officers.
New officer security measures are covered in the department's Back to Basics program. They include protective vests, personal body alarms and emergency response teams. That's according to Janie Cockrell, director of the TDCJ's Institutional Division.
The measures were announced during the monthly TDCJ meeting by the Institutional Division leaders. The initiatives were implemented following a departmental report that detailed the reasons for the December 13th, 2000, escape of seven inmates from the Connally Unit in South Texas.
During the escape, the inmates took eleven prison employees hostage as they outsmarted and overpowered them.
