Convict Has Way To Cut Sentence
By Hartford Courant
Published: 02/13/2002

A Connecticut Judge handed a convicted robber an unusual challenge last week: Cut your prison term from four years to 27 months if you learn to read and write.
The judge told Jose Cruz, 19, if he doesn't learn to read and write he will have to serve all four years. Lawyers on both sides agreed to the offer and left it to Cruz's attorney, Keith E. Dubay Jr., to bring Cruz back before the court whenever Cruz can read to the judge.
Cruz, a father of two from Hartford, pleaded guilty to second-degree robbery in December. He and four other men jumped the victim, who they said owed them money. Cruz also pulled a BB gun on the man during the robbery last year. He showed little emotion when Solomon, who's known to order convicts to go to school after serving time, offered him the special deal.
Cruz had tried to get his GED diploma before, but quit. 'You knew coming here, you would serve some time,' the judge told Cruz. 'This is a very serious offense. Society can't survive if people are going to be out there doing these kinds of crimes. You haven't been dealt the best cards growing up. I'm surprised you haven't spent significant time in the criminal justice system.'

Hiring an attorney can present confusing situations for someone. It’s hard to tell whether you’ll get the best service possible in your situation. You likely have a lot of questions. Will your lawyer hand off your matter to someone else? Will your lawyer return your phone calls? It’s hard to know without someone you can trust. If you been rollover accident in Waco you need a lawyer. People in Central Texas have trusted Dunnam & Dunnam for almost 100 years for their most pressing legal concerns. They understand the value of a good advocate. They’re a family helping Waco families since 1925.
