The private corrections industry is poised to benefit from increased growth in the federal prison population, an aging prison population and new community-based services designed to train and house former inmates as an offset to high incarceration costs, according to a research report issued by the investment banking firm of Morgan Lewis Githens & Ahn, Inc. Henry J. Coffey, Jr., a Managing Director and Senior Research Analyst at Morgan Lewis estimates that the populaiton increase could account for an additional 8,800 to 16,400 beds in private corrections facilities housing federal prisoners. The report also points out that the aging prisoner population is expected to increase faster than the overall prison population, increasing demand for healthcare needs. Community-based correctional services such as halfway house and home detention, along with electronic monitoring, offer new avenues of expansion for private corrections companies.
