W.Va. Jail Seeks Source of Inmates' Itchiness

Corrections officials are investigating an outbreak of minor rashes and other skin problems among a group of inmates at the Central Regional Jail in Braxton County.
All 16 men housed in one pod at the Flatwoods jail have complained of problems, said Steve Canterbury, executive director of the Regional Jail and Correctional Facility Authority.
Six inmates had minor rashes and skin irritants that likely resulted from poor hygiene, Canterbury said.
One inmate had some type of dermatitis that could have resulted from an allergic reaction to the laundry detergent used at the jail, or to the material used in the inmates' jumpsuit. The inmate has been given a different uniform and his clothes will be washed in a different detergents, he said.
Some inmates who complained may have been coerced by other prisoners, he said.
The Braxton County Health Department will inspect the pod Wednesday. If a pathogen is found, the pod will be sanitized and the inmates will receive immediate treatment.
'I'm not going to definitively say nothing is going on until I get the lab reports back,' Canterbury said.
