Police found a burned body inside the car of an eastern Kentucky sheriff's candidate who had once served time in prison for conspiracy to commit murder and had been reported missing earlier in the day.
Paul L. Browning's car was found Saturday near the Virginia and Tennessee state lines, said Trooper Buddy Simpson, a spokesman for the Kentucky State Police.
Browning, 56, had called home on Friday to say he would be back around 5 p.m., said his son, Paul Browning III.
''He spoke with my mother and was fine,'' he said. ''I was suspicious when he wasn't home for the tip-off of the UK (University of Kentucky basketball) game, and I was even more suspicious when he wasn't home at half time.''
The family reported Browning missing Saturday.
It could take several days to identify the remains found in the car, state police spokeswoman Lt. Lisa Rudzinski said. ''It's too preliminary in the investigation to know if foul play was the cause of death,'' she said.
Browning was elected Harlan County sheriff in 1981 but was arrested the following year amid accusations that he conspired to kill a local magistrate and the county school board chairman. He was sentenced in 1982 to 10 years in prison for conspiracy to commit murder and was paroled in 1985. Neither person was killed.
Browning said his attempt to shut down bootlegging activities and corruption in Harlan County had led to his troubles.
In January, he filed papers to run for the same sheriff's post.
Harlan County, in southeastern Kentucky, has about 33,000 residents.

Hiring an attorney can present confusing situations for someone. It’s hard to tell whether you’ll get the best service possible in your situation. You likely have a lot of questions. Will your lawyer hand off your matter to someone else? Will your lawyer return your phone calls? It’s hard to know without someone you can trust. If you been hit in head on collision in Waco you need a lawyer. People in Central Texas have trusted Dunnam & Dunnam for almost 100 years for their most pressing legal concerns. They understand the value of a good advocate. They’re a family helping Waco families since 1925.
