| British Millionaire Escapes Death Sentence for Killing |

A British millionaire convicted in the 1986 murders of two business rivals escaped the death penalty Wednesday as a Florida judge sentenced him to life in prison, the defendant's lawyer said. Krishna Maharaj, 63, who has spent most of the last 15 years on Florida's death row, will not be eligible for parole for more than 50 years under the life sentence imposed by Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Jerald Bagley, defense lawyer Clive Stafford-Smith said. Maharaj, a former banana importer who once owned a stable of racehorses and a fleet of Rolls Royces, had originally been sentenced to death in Florida's electric chair for the killing of Duane Moo Young and to life in prison for the death of his father Derrick Moo Young. The two men, who were from Jamaica, were shot to death in a Miami hotel room. The Florida Supreme Court ultimately upheld the convictions but overturned the death sentence and ordered Maharaj resentenced. Maharaj's lawyers say their client was 25 miles away at the time of the killings. Stafford-Smith said they will carry Maharaj's bid to overturn his conviction to U.S. federal courts as soon as possible. 'What happened today doesn't make any difference to someone who is innocent,' Stafford-Smith said. 'He is very glad to have this behind him.' The death sentence for Maharaj, a Trinidad-born British citizen, angered British parliamentarians and anti-death penalty campaigners. Conservative MP Peter Bottomley testified on Maharaj's behalf at the resentencing hearing. After listening to three days of testimony, a 12-member Florida jury voted 11-1 to recommend that Maharaj be sentenced to life in prison. In pronouncing sentence, Bagley, who held the final decision, said he had no reason to override the jury's recommendation. |
