A fire broke out at Madagascar's largest prison Sunday, enabling a number of inmates to escape, prison officials said. It wasn't clear how many prisoners escaped and there were no reports of injuries or deaths. Police could be seen recapturing about 15 inmates Sunday, kicking and beating them. Prison officials who spoke on condition of anonymity said the fire was apparently started by inmates who were protesting conditions. The fire gutted three cell blocks, the officials said. The prison is meant to hold 800 prisoners, but a study two years ago found more than 4,000 detained there. Many prisoners are awaiting trial, which can take years to come to court. The fire comes amid a dispute over Dec. 16 presidential elections that has cast Madagascar into political turmoil and raised widespread fears over a breakdown in law and order. Opposition leader Marc Ravalomanana claimed he won the flawed election outright and declared himself president, despite official results stating that no candidate won more than half the vote. Thousands of opposition supporters seized control of the capital, forcing incumbent President Didier Ratsiraka to move his capital to the coastal port of Toamasina. Clashes among supporters of the two sides have killed about 26 people. Madagascar, a poor Indian Ocean island nation of 16 million people, lies about 400 kilometers (240 miles) off the coast of Mozambique. |
