| California Authorities Probe Inmate's Death Leap |

San Francisco sheriff's authorities ordered an investigation recently after an inmate broke out of a jail van on the freeway and then plunged to his death from an overpass. Just how 20-year-old Leland Andrew Staats managed to get through the van's steel bars and reinforced glass to escape on Highway 101 is still a mystery. Authorities say the 6-foot 2-inch, 170-pound inmate's hands were chained to his waist and he was in leg irons while being taken from the Hall of Justice to San Francisco General Hospital for psychiatric evaluation. He broke out of the southbound van at 10 p.m. April 4 and headed to the west side of the highway, near San Bruno Avenue and 15th Street, said Eileen Hirst, a Sheriff's Department spokeswoman. Hirst said it is unclear whether the darkness may have prevented Staats from realizing that he faced a 30-foot drop to the street below. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The deputy driving the van heard a commotion in the back and tried to pull over safely, only to see the man jump out and go over the side, Hirst said. Sheriff's officials ordered an investigation into transport security. Staats had been in custody since March 7 on charges of making terrorist threats, stalking, making annoying phone calls and refusing to leave the University of San Francisco campus, where he was not a student. |
