Investigators are trying to determine why an inmate who escaped from the Lehigh County Prison on Sunday had been working in the kitchen, Warden Dale Meisel said. They're also looking into how Raymond Terron-Perez, 29, who was facing sentencing next week for his part in a drug-related shooting at the Lehigh Valley Mall last summer, made it from the kitchen to a warehouse upstairs, where he escaped. Terron-Perez was not supposed to be in the warehouse, which is accessible through doors operated by officers in a booth, he said. Other doors, also operated by officers in a booth, lead outside, Meisel said. County and Allentown police investigators went looking for Terron-Perez, possibly checking his former addresses in Reading, Meisel said. Terron-Perez was convicted last month of aggravated assault, reckless endangerment and conspiracy for an Aug. 9 shooting at the mall. The shooting occurred during a drug deal in which the victim tried to pass off more than 20 pounds of oregano as marijuana. Prosecutors said Terron-Perez ordered someone else to shoot the victim. Asked if Terron-Perez had received help from someone on the inside, Meisel said, ''We're not ruling anything out at the present time. There are numerous places to hide at the warehouse, where food, clothing, cleaning supplies and other items are kept.'' He theorized that Terron-Perez made it into the warehouse and escaped when the door opened. Through cameras, officers in the control booths saw him running down Linden Street. |
