Ex-prisoner Says She Was Strip-searched In View of Men

Prison officers at a Massachusetts prison violated an inmate's civil rights when they strip-searched her repeatedly in front of a window through which passing male employees could watch, according to a lawsuit filed yesterday in federal court. 
''To expose your body publicly to other people, particularly to men, was outrageous and humiliating,'' said attorney Howard Friedman, representing the former inmate who filed her suit anonymously.
The Department of Corrections wouldn't comment on the suit, but spokesman Justin Latini said that female officers who conduct almost all strip searches at MCI-Framingham - the only women's prison in the state - try to respect inmates. ''Searches are done in a private-type area,'' Latini said.
The lawsuit, however, alleges that during seven strip searches from March to December of 2000, male prison employees would gather outside a window to watch ''Jane Doe'' take off her clothes and submit to an examination.
Because the plaintiff was serving a sentence for forging a prescription and possessing the painkiller codeine, prison authorities had the right to subject her to strip searches and drug tests; what her suit objects to is the ''improper manner'' in which they were conducted.
Before her release from prison, the plaintiff complained several times to the officers who performed the searches and later to other officials, including the deputy superintendent, according to the suit, which names MCI-Framingham superintendent Barbara Guarino and three officers.
Friedman is also a lawyer in a class-action suit against the Suffolk County Sheriff's Department and the city of Boston for illegal strip searches of women held at the jail before trial from 1995 to 1999.
In that case, US District Judge Nancy Gertner has ruled that the sheriff's department and the city must pay damages to about 5,000 women. On June 3, Gertner will hear arguments about how much money should be awarded to each woman illegally strip-searched.
