Victims of domestic violence spoke openly with convicted inmates at the Orange County Correctional Facility recently. Officials said they hope the victim impact program will help inmates learn about the long-term consequences regarding abuse in the lives of everyday people. A victim of domestic abuse, Ernestine McCray, spoke to inmates on April 25. McCray was sexually abused by her father at a young age. Later in life, her former husband beat her with his fists. McCray's story often has an immediate impact on the inmates who listen to her experiences. 'It was a tremendous presentation; she's a tremendous person. I thank her for coming and allowing us to see the damage that is done and the process to turn that around,' inmate William Adams said. McCray eventually gathered up enough courage to divorce her husband. Unfortunately, she lost both her husband and a son the couple had together in a boating accident. However, McCray feels she receives healing in speaking about her experiences. There is a special program called The Vine Program at the Orange County Correctional Facility for victims of domestic abuse. Victims of domestic violence are notified when their attackers are released from the correctional facility. |
