A standoff at a Scottish jail where 24 inmates had barricaded themselves inside a dormitory ended peacefully Monday when the prisoners gave up. The Scottish Prison Service said the standoff began Sunday evening at Low Moss Prison, a medium-security jail near Glasgow, western Scotland. The cause of the incident was not given. A spokesman for the prison service said staff members persuaded the inmates to come out without the use of force on Monday afternoon. 'At the moment, around two dozen prisoners are being relocated. It is too early to assess any damage caused,' he said on condition of anonymity. 'There appears to have been some vandalism, and the matter may be referred to the police.' No injuries were reported, and fire officers were stationed outside the prison as a safeguard. The incident was the third disturbance at the jail in just over two months. The latest one involved a 10-hour standoff during which a hostage was taken. It was brought to a peaceful end on April 21. The jail is listed for closure under the local parliament's prisons review. |
