Seven Dead in Brazil Prison Riot
By Associated Press
Published: 05/03/2002

A three-hour uprising that left seven inmates dead at a Sao Paulo prison ended Thursday after the 50 rebelling prisoners released five officers they held hostage, police said.
The rebellion was sparked by a fight between rival gangs at the Temporary Detention Center of Guarulhos, a suburb on the outskirts of Sao Paulo, an official at the Sao Paulo State Prison Administration
Department said.
The Guarulhos police department said the seven inmates were stabbed to death with knives in an apparent settling of accounts.
The rebellious inmates demanded that some of them be transferred to other facilities where they could be nearer to their families, police said. It was unclear if authorities agreed to the demand.
About 650 inmates are in the prison, which was built to hold 768.
