Three inmates, including one from the Bahamas, broke out of a maximum-security prison in Jamaica's capital on Monday morning, police said. Bahamian Eugene Symnotee, 32, and Jamaicans Wayne Cameron, 25, and Kevin Gordon, 26 escaped from Tower Street Adult Correctional Center by cutting their way through their cells and scaling the prison walls, a police statement said. Police were searching for the men, and prison officials are investigating how they managed to cut through their cell walls. Symnotee, who is also know as Adderley Michael, was serving a two-year sentence for cocaine possession and is also wanted in the Bahamas on drug charges, police said. Cameron was serving nine years, and Gordon was serving 10 - both for illegal possession of firearm and robbery. The three men had tried to escape earlier this month, when four inmates had blasted a 3-foot (1-meter) hole in the prison wall. After the explosion, about 60 inmates rushed at the opening, but were prevented by officers from getting through, prison commissioner Errol Fearon said. It was unclear if the three who broke out Monday were among the four who caused the May 4 explosion. Prison authorities have blamed inadequate staff for frequent escape attempts. The prison employees 80 officers at the Tower Street Correctional Center to guard 1,300 inmates. |
