An ex-convict on parole opened fire on New York State Police who had stopped his stolen car, wounding a trooper before the gunman was shot dead. Michael J. Fisher Jr., 21, of Hallstead, Pa., died in Tuesday's violence. Trooper John Spero, 30, was in stable condition Wednesday after surgery to remove a bullet from his left hand. Spero and Trooper Shawn Dean stopped a 1985 Dodge Spirit after noticing its expired inspection sticker, police said. While the troopers talked to passenger Wayne P. Rafferty, 19, Fisher opened fire with a Colt .38-caliber revolver, wounding Spero, police said. Both troopers returned fire, hitting Fisher several times. He died at the scene. Two spent shell casings were recovered from his revolver. Police said Fisher was wanted in Pennsylvania for a violation of his parole on a theft conviction. The car was stolen Friday in Binghamton. |
