Union Criticizes Folsom Prison Brawl Investigation
By KCRA
Published: 05/20/2002

A melee at Folsom Prison was caught on videotape and apparently shows an associate warden kicking a downed inmate. On May 9, the state's largest corrections officers union came out to support how the brawl was handled, but criticized the way it's now being investigated. The California Correctional Peace Officers Association is asking tough questions and making bold accusations of their own. At issue, according to the union, is not how an associate warden reacted during the melee last April, but how the Department of Corrections is treating that manager.
Union spokesman Lance Corcoran got his first look at the videotape recently.
The videotape shows 80 inmates battling on the prison yard. After seeing it, Corcoran said that it doesn't look like anyone did anything wrong in quelling the riot, including a man who can be seen apparently kicking an inmate.
Instead, Corcoran had a much bigger concern. He said that he is concerned that the associate warden is still allowed on the job.
On top of having to deal with that perceived double standard, Corcoran pointed to a recently released videotape of a deadly riot inside Pelican Bay Prison as proof of how stressful the job is. Making it even more stressful, he says, is the department's constant investigation of prison officers' every action against inmates.
It's a policy that the union believes wrongly subjects some prison officers to unnecessary investigation.
Results of the investigation aren't expected until the end of the month.
