A man charged in the fatal shooting of three people in an apartment above the Carnegie Deli punched a correction officer at Rikers Island, authorities said. Sean Salley, 30, allegedly punched Officer Vincent Donovan, 46, in the face on Tuesday, causing him to fall backward and strike his head against the bars of a cell behind him. Donovan was taken to New York Hospital Medical Center in Queens, where he received 10 stitches, according to Correction Department spokesman Tom Antenen. Salley was charged with second-degree assault and reclassified as a violent inmate, Antenen said. Salley and Andre Smith, 31, are on trial in Manhattan Supreme Court in the deaths last year of three people, including ''Dirty Dancing'' actress Jennifer Stahl. Prosecutors say Salley and Smith attempted to rob Stahl last May in an apartment she used to sell marijuana. They say the two men fled with $800 and marijuana after shooting the five people in the apartment, three of them fatally. In addition to Stahl, Stephen King, 32, of Manhattan, and Charles Helliwell, 36, from Boston, were killed. Two others were shot but survived and are expected to testify. |
