Three former DC jail inmates say chronic record-keeping problems kept them in jail beyond their release dates and they're suing. The suit, filed May 16 against the DC jail, alleges that the jail has a pattern of keeping people past their court-ordered release dates. It also states that as many as one in ten inmates in the District's corrections system at any given time is held beyond release dates. Class-action status is sought for the suit filed in U.S. District Court, which would have to be certified by a federal court. Plaintiffs' lawyer William Claiborne says poor record-keeping at the jail has been so extensive that the pool of plaintiffs could easily reach into the hundreds. The district already faces a $440 million lawsuit filed on behalf of Joseph Heard, a deaf, mute and mentally ill man allegedly kept at the jail for nearly two years after a misdemeanor trespassing charge against him was dismissed. |
