Twelve inmates and a prison officer were killed during a rebellion in a maximum-security Brazilian prison in the northern state of Amazonas, state Justice Secretary Felix Valois told reporters. About 400 inmates took part in the almost 12-hour-long rebellion in the Anisio Jobim prison in Amazonas state capital Manaus, 5,000 kilometers (3,100 miles) northwest of Rio de Janeiro, O Globo television said. Inmates held six people hostage during the rebellion and shot the prison officer dead with six bullets, Valois said, according to Globo News agency. Globo quoted Valois as saying that the rebellion had ended the evening of May 25. It was not clear if the prisons had surrendered or if police had gained control of the penitentiary. Prison officials and local police contacted by The Associated Press were not available for comment. Uprisings are frequent in Brazil's overcrowded prisons. The Anisio Jobim prison has a capacity for 316 prisoners, but 405 are kept there, according to the Amazonas state justice secretariat. |
