Britain's prison service spent 40,000 pounds ($58,000) on new locks at a London jail where suspected international terrorists are held, after a warden took keys out of the building by mistake, officials said Monday. Emergency locksmiths were rushed in to change hundreds of locks at Belmarsh high security prison, in southeast London, following the security breach. The prison holds murderers, rapists, infamous 'Great Train Robber' Ronnie Biggs and several suspected international terrorists being detained without trial under emergency powers passed in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks. A Prison Service spokesman said Monday an internal investigation was under way. |
