| Convicted Murderer Charged With Trying to Escape |

A grand jury in New York indicted a convicted murderer on charges he stole handcuff keys from an officer and assaulted him while trying to escape. Prosecutors accuse Larry Stevens, 39, an inmate at Southport Correctional Facility near the Pennsylvania border, of injuring extradition agent Joseph McAuley at a local Burger King on Dec. 11. The indictment handed up June 10 in Jefferson County Court includes charges of robbery, assault, attempted escape and criminal mischief, reported the Watertown Daily Times. According to court documents, McAuley and a partner, Albin Enqist, parked at the restaurant with prisoners after picking up food at the drive-through window. McAuley, owner of a Freehold, N.J., prison transport firm, then escorted Stevens into the bathroom and took handcuffs off the prisoner's right hand. When McAuley tried to put the handcuffs back on, Stevens grabbed the officer's hands and began banging his head against the wall, McAuley told police. McAuley said Stevens tried to run out the door, but the officer managed to hang onto him. Enqist said he then rushed inside to help subdue Stevens. Stevens, formerly of Staten Island, began serving a 72 years-to-life sentence in 1998 on murder, manslaughter, robbery and burglary convictions from Westchester County and Long Island. Authorities said he was being taken from New Jersey where he faced burglary and robbery charges to Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, N.Y., 55 miles south of Montreal, when he tried to escape. McAuley had driven through Watertown, 65 miles north of Syracuse near Lake Ontario, to pick up prisoners there. |
