Relatives of former New York crime boss John Gotti are upset with the Missouri prison where Gotti died because the warden has refused to turn over the remains, according to a broadcast report. KYTV reported June 11 that members of Gotti's family tried unsuccessfully to obtain his remains so they can be returned to New York for burial, which was held last week. The 61-year-old Gotti, who battled cancer of the head and throat, died Monday at the U.S. Medical Center for Federal Prisoners. Warden Bill Hedrick ordered an autopsy for Gotti, but the family complained that the procedure is unnecessary given the knowledge of Gotti's illness. ''If he died a mysterious death, if there was a reason to have an autopsy, then that's understandable. But there is no reason. He did not die a mysterious death,'' Lewis Kasman, who acts as a spokesman for the family and calls himself a godson of Gotti, told KYTV. ''He died of head, neck and throat cancer and that's the cause of death and the warden knows that.'' The warden has the authority to order an autopsy on any inmate who dies while in the prison's custody, prison spokeswoman Diane Smith said. Smith would not reveal whether Gotti's relatives had seen Gotti after he died, but she said the prison's standard procedure involves turning the body over to a contracting funeral home charged with making the remains presentable. Only after the body meets the prison's requirements for presentability is it turned over to relatives, she said. ''The funeral home is working diligently, and as soon as the body is prepared and ready, we will turn the body over to the Gotti family,'' she told The Associated Press. |
