A white supremacist responsible for torching three synagogues in 1999 fractured a jail officer's skull while trying to escape with another inmate, Shasta County sheriff's officials said. The officer, Timothy Renault, 23, was hospitalized in serious condition on Monday. ''The officer pretty much thwarted an escape attempt,'' said Sheriff's Lt. Dave Compomizzo. He said the inmates may have tried to use Renault as a hostage. Renault was beaten with a handmade weapon while he was making his routine checks Saturday at the county jail. Other officers responded to his calls for help. Police said he was attacked by Matthew Williams, 34, who was hiding in a shower stall with Paul Gordon Smith, 24. In November, Williams was sentenced to 30 years in federal prison for arson at Congregation B'nai Israel, Congregation Beth Shalom and Kenesset Israel Torah Center and an abortion clinic. His younger brother, Tyler Williams, 31, was sentenced to 21 years and three months for the same crimes. The two are in the Shasta County jail awaiting trial Oct. 8 on charges they killed a gay couple in Happy Valley on July 1, 1999. Matthew Williams and Smith, who is also awaiting a murder trial, were being housed in a segregated unit for inmates considered a threat to others. They apparently arranged their individual cells to make it appear that they were still there, Compomizzo said. The Williams brothers' crimes prompted a law enacted in 2001 prohibiting insurers from canceling policies because of claims from hate-crime damages. |
