Fire fighters continued Monday night to extinguish a blaze that destroyed the dairy barn that supplied milk for most upstate New York prisons. No cow or human was injured in the fire at Clinton Correction Facility, 55 miles south of Montreal. About 15 prison employees evacuated the building after an inmate discovered flames around 1:15 p.m. Monday and told a supervisor. ''It started somewhere in the middle (of the barn) and the wind pushed it through a little,'' Dannemora Fire Chief Byron Wing told the Plattsburgh Press-Republican. He was unsure what started the fire. All 100 milking cows and 150 other cattle were grazing in a nearby field when the fire started. Prison employees hoped to find local farmers who could temporarily care for the cows, the main source of milk for upstate prisons, said Daniel Senkowski, Clinton's superintendent. ''It makes me heartsick,'' he said. ''We took a lot of pride in our operation.'' The barn, which featured a slate roof and crown moldings, dated back to the 1940s, village historian Pete Light said. ''It's a big loss today,'' he said. ''You don't see that kind of building anymore.'' |
